Record-breaking £139m cannabis seizure prompts arrests in Wales
Home Office intelligence teams and Canadian officials tracked the containers, and officers said the haul was the largest cannabis seizure ever made by Border Force.
On Tuesday, Border Force officers seized 12 tonnes of cannabis at Southampton Port, a haul valued at around £139 million discovered in two shipping containers from Canada.
Home Office intelligence analysts collaborated with the Canada Border Services Agency to track the two containers across the Atlantic, disrupting transnational organized crime networks.
The South West Regional Organised Crime Unit arrested three people on Tuesday following warrants in Merthyr Tydfil, Ebbw Vale, and Abertillery, with Acting Inspector Stuart Cumine confirming the operation.
Migration Minister Mike Tapp praised the "record-breaking haul," while Border Force Director General Phil Douglas emphasized "relentless action to stop drugs" and Canada Border Services Agency President Erin O'Gorman credited intelligence-sharing.
Intercepted on May 6, this shipment eclipsed the previous 2017 record by four tonnes, delivering a significant blow to organized crime groups behind the operation.
