Threats investigated by Capitol Police jump 57 percent
The US Capitol Police investigated 14,938 threat cases in 2025, marking a third consecutive annual rise linked to heightened political violence and increased law enforcement partnerships.
- Last year, the United States Capitol Police reported 14,938 investigations, marking a third consecutive rise and the highest level in years, up from 9,474 cases in 2024.
- USCP officials said the rise stems partly from a false sense of anonymity on online platforms and increased reporting through outreach with the Congressional Community in recent months.
- The USCP's Threat Assessment Section processed concerning reports, expanded the 24/7 Protective Intelligence Operations Center, and deployed Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys who consulted on 875 cases and 1,705 subpoenas.
- The USCP said violent incidents included a man lunging at Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and a punch to Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., and it collaborates with the Department of Justice and local partners to mitigate threats.
- The multi-year data show USCP investigated 8,008 cases in 2023 and 9,474 in 2024, with formal agreements tripling to more than 350 departments in 2025, USCP said.
