Thousands of UC workers begin 2-day strike Monday

  • On Nov. 17, 2025, AFSCME Local 3299 led a two-day strike at 18 University of California campuses and medical facilities involving more than 40,000 employees.
  • After bargaining that began in mid-2024, Michael Avant, president of AFSCME Local 3299, criticized UC spending on new facilities and executive raises while workers demand higher wages, cost-of-living and safe staffing.
  • Picket lines formed at UCSF Medical Center Mission Bay, UC Irvine Medical Center, UC Riverside and UCLA campuses and hospitals, with custodians, food service workers, patient care assistants and hospital technicians marching and pickets expected to end by 4 p.m. on both days.
  • On Nov. 8 and Nov. 15, two unions reached tentative agreements, and UC said facilities would stay open with contingency plans despite some delays.
  • With bargaining running 21 months, UC officials say they have negotiated in good faith with AFSCME while two unions settled this month, amid a systemwide vacancy crisis linked to low wages.
