The unexpected return was arranged by sub-antarcic penguins on the island of Galindez, where the Ukrainian Antarctic station "Academic Vernadsky" is located. In the second half of August, biologists counted at least 3,500 birds there — and their number continues to grow — and this was reported to the National Antarctic Science Centre.

Biologists of the 31st Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition recorded the mass return of sub-Antarctic penguins to Galindez Island in the second half of August. Usually the birds swam much later — from mid-September.
