Thousands of migrants in Ceuta wait in limbo while Spain figures out what to do with them
Spain will prioritize returns and repatriation while expanding temporary shelter and individual screening for thousands still in Ceuta, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Spain's cabinet approved a "single command" for Ceuta led by Territorial Policy Minister Angel Víctor Torres to accelerate migrant returns following the July influx from Morocco.
- More than 70,000 migrants entered the enclave in late July, swimming or crossing on foot from Morocco; most have since returned, but between 3,500 and 7,000 remain in Ceuta.
- Local residents have complained about insecurity and hygiene problems linked to homeless migrants, prompting the government to announce reception centres for 1,800 migrants last week.
- Torres told reporters the command prioritizes "the return and repatriation of the greatest possible number of people, adults and minors," while respecting Spanish law and human rights.
- While facing demands from the conservative Popular Party to return all migrants, Torres warned that those advocating such solutions "out of populism or to scrape together a few votes are mistaken.
