This Swiss Village Has Been Swamped and Now It’s Snowed Under. They’re Slowly Digging Their Way Out
More than 90% of Blatten was destroyed by a 9 million cubic meter mudslide triggered by glacier retreat and warming, with residents aiming to return by 2030.
- In Blatten, on May 28, a slide from the Kleines Nesthorn buried the village, killing a 64-year-old man and destroying more than 90% of buildings.
- Swiss glaciologists warned of a thaw in recent years attributed in large part to global warming, while local observers say shifting geology that set off the landslide is now declining.
- The mudslide's footprint spans about 2-1/2 kilometers wide and 100 meters high, with Lukas Kalbermatten, local hotelier, seeing his Hotel Edelweiss half-sunk and residents using rowboats for attic access.
- Work crews have restored electricity and telecom lines, dug a drainage canal, and cleared high roads in recent months, while about 300-odd residents remain displaced and locals warn of a valley tourism catastrophe.
- Manfred Ebener, Blatten construction coordinator, says 400,000 cubic meters of rock and ice remain unstable, with snowfall and seasonal melt affecting risk; clearing and rebuilding should allow return by 2030.
