These Are the Most, Least Stressed Cities in the US: Study
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES, JUL 11 – Philadelphia ranks seventh most stressed city due to the highest U.S. unemployment rate at 11.4% and low median credit scores, WalletHub reports assessing work, financial, family, and health stress.
- WalletHub published a list this week identifying Detroit as the most stressed city in the US based on a 2025 assessment of 180 cities.
- The ranking reflects multiple stressors including Detroit’s 11.4% unemployment, lowest adjusted median income over $38,000, and highest 31.5% poverty rate.
- Detroit also shows the second-highest divorce and single-parent rates, low median credit score of 624, high violent crime, and obesity rates, all contributing to elevated stress.
- WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo noted that certain stressors, such as challenges involving personal relationships or the workplace, are beyond our ability to manage.
- The findings emphasize how economic, family, health, and safety conditions in a city impact resident stress and mental health risks such as anxiety and sleep problems.
