Anti-Gang Advocate Remembers Teen Gunned Down in Surrey
Police say the killings are tied to B.C.’s gang conflict as KidsPlay Foundation urges more mentorship and positive programs for at-risk youth.
- Police responded to calls of a shooting in an underground parking lot in Surrey's Newton neighbourhood around 10 p.m. on Sunday, finding two young males, 16 and 18 years old, suffering from gunshot wounds.
- According to Kal Dosanjh, CEO of KidsPlay Foundation, gangs recruit youth by offering 'short-term success' including money and brotherhood. Dosanjh warned that gangs view vulnerable teens as disposable, telling them there are only two ways out: jail or death.
- Describing one of the slain teens, Dosanjh called him 'tremendous, absolutely incredible, intelligent, strong, focused, driven, and ambitious.' KidsPlay aims to insulate children with positive programming and values to help them avoid the wrong path.
- IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong confirmed both victims had previous interactions with police. While families in the South Asian community often 'don't want to air their dirty laundry,' Dosanjh urged parents to seek help early if children are involved in gangs.
- Dosanjh emphasized that the community must prioritize positive activity and mentorship to prevent more youth from becoming statistics. 'We have to invest the time and energy and commit ourselves to mentoring them,' he said.
