Volkswagen Is Turning the Jetta Into a $15,000 Electric SUV, but Not for the US Roads
Volkswagen says the Jetta sub-brand will launch four NEV models by 2028 as it targets China’s low-cost EV market.
- On Tuesday, April 21, the Volkswagen Group debuted the Jetta X concept at the Beijing Auto Show Media Night, a rugged, pure electric SUV previewing the brand's expansion into China.
- Unlike the sedan known by American drivers, the Jetta name functions as a separate, affordable brand in China, "intended to carry its leadership position in affordable internal combustion engine vehicles into the electric age," Volkswagen said.
- Characterized by pronounced fenders and narrow LED headlights, the Jetta X features a "Modern Robust" design language with an integrated skid plate; the minimalist cabin is dominated by large screens.
- Jetta will introduce four new "NEV" or "New Energy Vehicle" models by 2028, part of a broader offensive including over 20 electrified vehicles in 2026, expanding to 50 models by 2030.
- While the first production model arrives this year, American consumers should not expect an electric Jetta SUV, as Volkswagen is instead focusing on gas-powered SUVs like the Atlas.
