Historic Divinity School Is Offering the First Doctoral Degree in ‘AI and Moral Agency’

The program will train students to examine AI ethics and human agency, and at least 66 people have already expressed interest, the school said.

  • Starting next year, Shaw University Divinity School plans to offer a Doctor of Education in Artificial Intelligence and Moral Agency, building AI literacy with emphasis on social justice and ethics.
  • Founded after the Civil War to provide religious literacy to formerly enslaved people, the school now probes artificial intelligence ethics as technology performs tasks traditionally handled by humans.
  • In June, the divinity school secured accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission and is pursuing approval from the Association of Theological Schools, where this would be the first program of its kind.
  • At least 66 people have expressed interest in the program, which requires a Master's degree and five years of professional experience, as most students are bi-vocational.
  • Theological institutions, rooted in 2,000 years of reflection on human agency, increasingly examine artificial intelligence, a trend boosted by Pope Leo XIV's encyclical "Magnifica Humanitas," which advocates for human dignity amid technological change.
