In graduate school, a writer-teacher – I think it was Charles Baxter -- told us that it was bad form to wrap up a short story with a coincidence. It made sense. After all, real life makes a lot less sense than fiction. In reality, we can feel free to run into people all we want, but in a story, it seems a little suspicious and lazy to have characters solve problems with a happenstance you’ve made happen.
