The proliferation of books generated with artificial intelligence in Amazon is reducing the visibility and revenue of human authors, while publishers and bookstores try to define new rules to distinguish quality, transparency and automated production.
AI Slop Books Are Flooding Amazon and Draining Human Authors' Pay
A new study tracked 14,419 self-published Amazon books from 2023 to 2026 and found the catalog grew 38.3 times over while quarterly revenue grew only 8.9 times. AI-heavy titles now make up a fifth of the catalog but earn barely a tenth of the sales, and human authors are seeing revenue drop across most genres anyway.
