Rare Two-Headed Diamondback Baby Turtle Hatchling Found in Cape Cod
On Thursday, a rare two-headed diamondback terrapin was discovered at a protected nesting site in Wellfleet and brought to the Cape Wildlife Center for specialized care.
Bicephaly occurs when conjoined twins fail to fully separate during development, a rare anomaly most commonly seen in reptiles and snakes.
Weighing 5.2-gram, the turtle represents only the second case of this condition the center has documented in five years, making it especially rare.
New England Wildlife Center CEO Zak Mertz said the hatchling is "behaving normally," and the team is monitoring its growth and behavior closely.
Diamondback terrapins are listed as a threatened species under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act, making this case a valuable opportunity to study rare developmental anatomy and physiology.
A two-headed diamond turtle was found in a protected nest in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The specimen weighs 5.2 grams and remains under veterinary observation.
A newly hatched diamond turtle with two heads has been discovered in a nature reserve on Cape Cod in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Both heads of the approximately five grams heavy animal are fully functional.
