Painting Stolen by Nazis Found in Argentina After Appearing in Real Estate Listing
The painting "Portrait of a Lady," valued at $50,000 and stolen by Nazis, was recovered after being listed in a property ad, leading to legal charges against the owners.
- On Wednesday, Argentine authorities recovered `Portrait of a Lady` by Giuseppe Ghislandi, looted from Jacques Goudstikker's collection and valued at about $50,000.
- Last month, Dutch journalists first spotted the painting in an ad for a property listed by a daughter of Friedrich Kadgien, and last week it appeared in a Mar del Plata listing owned by Patricia Kadgien before being taken down.
- When police entered the home to search for the work, they found it missing and placed Patricia Kadgien and Juan Carlos Cortegoso under house arrest this month; the Kadgien family lawyer later delivered the canvas to prosecutors.
- They were scheduled for a hearing Thursday on concealment and obstruction charges, and Marei von Saher, Goudstikker's daughter-in-law and heir claimant, seeks the artwork's return while the couple faces potential criminal responsibility.
- The recovered work is part of a larger Nazi-era looting of Jacques Goudstikker's collection, which passed through Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering and SS officer Friedrich Kadgien, reflecting losses of about 650,000 artworks valued at $20.5 billion, with more than 100,000 still unrecovered.
