Early filers hoping for a "very large refund" in 2026 may have to wait a little longer than they planned if they claimed these two tax credits.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) states that if taxpayers have applied for the Employment Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), even if they file their taxes very early, they will not receive their refunds until at least mid-February. This is entirely for security reasons and is part of the Protect Americans from Increased Taxes Act of 2015 (PATH Act).
