New laws include a 7.5% surcharge on large tech firms, expanded nicotine taxes, and vehicle fees expected to raise $550 million annually starting fiscal year 2027.
- On Jan. 1, Washington enacted a suite of tax increases and consumer laws covering vehicles, fees and IDs to raise revenue and address a $16 billion budget shortfall.
- Legislators raised the advanced computing surcharge for businesses with worldwide revenue over $25 billion and added a 0.5% business-and-occupation tax on Washington companies with over $250 million in taxable income.
- The state applied vehicle-related fee changes include truck and passenger vehicle weight fees expected to generate roughly $250 million, a 0.5% car sales tax assessment, and a luxury-vehicle levy over $100,000 starting Jan. 1.
- Under the new rules, striking workers can access up to six weeks of unemployment insurance starting two to three weeks after a strike, extending to employees in lockouts.
- Projections show the advanced computing surcharge will boost higher education programs revenue next fiscal year, and the next legislative session begins Jan. 12.
