On September 7th, the Japanese yen briefly rose nearly 2 yen against the US dollar in less than an hour, after previously trading around 155 yen/USD. The yen surged amid speculation of currency intervention. The US dollar approached a two-week high, while the yen slipped past the 160 yen/USD mark. Japan spent a record amount to support the yen.
There are forecasts that the yen-dollar exchange rate, which had risen to the 164 yen range per dollar, could fall further as it regains stability.
The yen has reached the 154 yen level in the foreign exchange market. The yen is appreciating rapidly. The yen briefly surged to the low 154 yen range, the highest level in about six months since late February 2026. Market participants remain wary of government and Bank of Japan intervention to buy yen. Some market participants are saying that "speculative movements may have been strong due to the New York market being closed."
