The World's Largest Oat Milk Producer Has Joined an Unusual Climate Journalism Campaign
The cartons carry an 89 Percent Project message that says 80% to 89% of people worldwide want stronger climate action, Covering Climate Now said.
On Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, Oatly debuted new milk cartons in New York featuring climate messaging from the '89 Percent Project,' a campaign launched by the nonprofit Covering Climate Now.
Caroline Reid, senior sustainability director at Oatly, said the project 'aligns with what we're trying to do,' as the company seeks to engage consumers in transitioning to renewable energy.
The '89 Percent Project' draws its name from a 2024 study in Nature Climate Change, which surveyed nearly 130,000 people across 125 countries and found 89% want intensified political action on climate.
Clay Calvert of the University of Florida warned that journalism organizations partnering with corporations risk losing independence, emphasizing the need for 'a wall of separation' between newsroom interests and corporate partners.
While 66% to 80% of Americans support climate policies, they underestimate public consensus; Mark Hertsgaard of Covering Climate Now urged journalists to 'draw the connections,' not just report facts.
