I've been following the remarkable progress of Deborah Kenny's Harlem Village Academies-a network of charter schools-for about 20 years now. And I've watched her develop a theory of K-12 education that transcends Harlem, that is nothing less than a major rethinking of how children-your children (I wish mine had had the opportunity)-can grow into thoughtful, ethical and, best of all, passionate citizens.
