Lebanon Has Become "Israeli Vietnam," the Cycle of Invasions Continues

A quarter of a century ago, Israel's occupation of southern Lebanon ended. For more than two decades, it failed to provide security in the north of the Jewish state and created the powerful Hezbollah. But the cycle of military incursions into the neighboring country continues. The latest invasion, in response to shelling by Shiite terrorists, claimed the lives of thousands of Lebanese, including civilians, and devastated infrastructure.

Exactly a quarter of a century ago, on Wednesday, May 24, 2000, the State of Israel announced that it was withdrawing from southern Lebanon to the international border in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 425. A war had ended that had affected Israeli soldiers in a way that the Vietnam War had affected American soldiers, and whose consequences still reverberate in the Middle East today.
