[The War Experiences of Umanchu, No Matter How Much We Talk About Them] (523) I Will Never Forget the Terror of the Gunfire. Sumiko Kuniyoshi (91), Shimosezu, Chatan Town, Became a "Pow" and Prepared to Die

The war started when I was in the fourth or fifth grade of elementary school. There were no bomb shelters in the neighborhood, so I fled aimlessly with my mother during air raids. We ran down the middle of the road, so we must have been in full view of the bombers. I don't know if they were aiming at us, but as we heard the sound of gunfire getting closer, we rolled into a ditch between a field and the road to escape. I'll never forget that fear.
