Russian War Blog Rybar Founder Arrested in Montenegro
Police detained the Rybar founder and four other Russians after warnings of hybrid warfare and attempts to destabilize Montenegro, officials said.
- On Friday, authorities in Montenegro arrested Mikhail Zvinchuk, head of the Russian war blog Rybar with more than 1.5 million subscribers, in the Adriatic resort of Risan on charges of spreading "Russian influence."
- Montenegro Prime Minister Milojko Spajic confirmed the detention followed warnings that the country faced hybrid warfare attempts. He stated, "Montenegro is protecting its interests, and no one will jeopardise our European future."
- The State Department previously offered a reward of up to $US10 million for information on 19 individuals managing Rybar-led channels, alleging they sought to "promote social division" and "encourage hate and violence in the United States."
- Following the arrest, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said on Friday that Russia may need to "top up" its prisoner exchange fund with European and United States citizens to free its own citizens held in Europe.
- This incident occurs amid long-standing tensions, as Montenegro joined NATO in 2017 and aligned with the European Union on sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine, leading Russia to declare the nation an enemy state.
