Preliminary data shows the American murder rate fell nearly 20% from 2024, likely marking the lowest level since national data collection began in 1960.

In the book Crime Wave, researchers explore how homicide rates tracked trends in Alcohol consumption, drug abuse, and firearm purchases, each increasing by their largest margin in 2020.
Some researchers attributed spikes to a so-called "Ferguson effect" in 2015 and "Minneapolis effect" in 2020, though a police "pullback" after George Floyd protests also worsened the rise.
