U.S. Budget Deficit Hit July Record of $432 Billion in Fiscal 2026

The shortfall widened as July outlays hit $766 billion and tariff refunds pushed customs duties to a net negative $8.55 billion, the Treasury said.

  • The Treasury Department reported a $432.2 billion deficit for July, the largest single-month shortfall since March 2021, reflecting $334 billion in receipts against $766.3 billion in outlays.
  • Record outlays of $766 billion drove the increase, partly because roughly $99 billion in benefit payments for Medicare and Social Security were pulled into July when August 1 fell on a nonbusiness day.
  • Customs duties became a net negative $8.55 billion after the Treasury paid $33.4 billion in tariff refunds following a Supreme Court ruling that struck down levies imposed by President Donald Trump.
  • The cumulative deficit for the first ten months reached $1.799 trillion, exceeding the full fiscal 2025 shortfall with two months remaining. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the total deficit will reach $2.1 trillion by Sept. 30.
  • Jeremy Horpedahl of the University of Central Arkansas noted that interest payments are growing rapidly. He stated, "The amount of debt is increasing, and the interest rate is much higher than it was six months or a year ago.
