The Trump administration expands its use of AI in the hunt for healthcare fraud
HHS will use ChatGPT and other AI tools to review annual audits from all 50 states and federal grantees, officials said.
On Thursday, The Department of Health and Human Services announced it will use ChatGPT to analyze audit reports from all 50 States, aiming to police how Recipients of federal Health dollars are auditing their programs.
Seeking to save government money, The Trump administration and Vice President Vance's anti-fraud task force have spent recent months promoting efforts to crack down on fraud in Medicaid and Medicare.
Recipients that spend at least $1 million annually must submit audits, which The Department alerted to all 50 States; Assistant Secretary Gustav Chiarello said, "Here, with AI, we're able to dig into it."
Critics caution that AI tools frequently make mistakes, noting past efforts targeted Democratic States and occasionally attacked before gathering facts; officials previously acknowledged a major mistake in a New York Medicaid fraud investigation.
Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson recently noted that anti-fraud efforts already involve AI technology to flag likely fraud, as other federal departments may follow Chiarello's lead to improve stewardship of federal dollars.
