Cumbria Misses Out as UK Town of Culture Shortlist Revealed
Residents created the postcard to highlight Nuneaton’s heritage, green spaces and community pride as 15 towns were shortlisted from 398 bids.
The UK Government announced 15 towns shortlisted for the inaugural UK Town of Culture competition, selected from nearly 400 bids across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Stockton Town Centre Ward, Leith, and Birkenhead advanced to compete for the £3 million prize.
Mirroring the success of the UK City of Culture programme, which brought more than £1 billion in investment to winning cities, the government aims to restore pride in local areas. Towns were split into small, medium, and large categories based on population size.
Stockton Council cabinet member Councillor Nigel Cooke described the town as a vibrant cultural hub, citing community cohesion and the Stockton International Riverside Festival as key strengths. "It's very much about community cohesion and the culture of Stockton being a very welcoming place," Cooke said.
Although not shortlisted, Nuneaton BID organized a community event on June 7 where residents created artwork and shared stories, producing a postcard that captured local pride. The initiative allowed citizens to contribute directly to the town's cultural narrative.
Each shortlisted town will receive £60,000 to develop full proposals assessed by an independent judging panel. The final winner, announced early next year, will receive a £3 million grant to deliver a cultural programme in 2028.
