‘The Simpsons’ writer who wrote episode where Trump became president is now running for president
On Tuesday, Emmy-winning Simpsons writer Dan Greaney announced his 2028 presidential bid in an Instagram video, dressed as a self-proclaimed prophet and declaring his candidacy as a progressive Republican.
Greaney's 2000 Simpsons episode predicted Trump's presidency 16 years before his election; in Season 11, Episode 17 titled 'Bart to the Future,' Lisa Simpson becomes president inheriting a budget crisis from a Trump administration.
Greaney cited seeing Trump surrounded by tech billionaires at the inauguration as spurring his candidacy, stating 'nobody was going to save us'; his platform includes expanding the Supreme Court to 13 justices and overturning Citizens United.
Identifying as a progressive Republican, Greaney criticized Trump, Vice President Vance, and 'billionaires, careerists and cowards in both parties' for abandoning American values as he enters the race more than two years before the 2028 election.
Greaney's transition from satirist to candidate marks a reversal from his earlier lack of political ambition; his June 2025 prediction that Trump's presidency would end by year's end did not materialize, prompting his direct political action.
