New BYD Atto 1 Revealed: Australia’s Cheapest EV Gets Bigger

- The second-generation BYD Atto 1 has been revealed in China, bringing a larger five-seat body, rear-wheel drive, and a front trunk—major upgrades from the current four-seat, front-drive model.
- Chinese government filings reveal the updated Atto 1 measures 4,205 mm long with a 2,650 mm wheelbase, while engineers replaced the torsion-beam rear axle with multi-link independent rear suspension.
- A bump above the windscreen houses an optional LiDAR sensor for the DiPilot 300 active safety suite, while the cabin features a floating central touchscreen and physical toggle switches.
- The new drivetrain supports a 39.2kWh battery offering 340km of WLTP range, and the vehicle adopts wider 205/60 R16 tyres on 16-inch alloy wheels.
- BYD Australia has not confirmed if the new model will replace the current Atto 1, with a spokesperson stating the vehicle is "not on the company's radar," while the current Essential variant remains priced at $19,990.
