Volkswagen Is Launching More Affordable EVs, Starting with These Two Models
The entry-level EVs start at about $29,000 and $30,100, as Volkswagen targets lower-cost electric cars with a shared platform and cost savings.
- On Wednesday, Volkswagen and Cupra began production of the ID. Polo and Cupra Raval at the Martorell plant in Spain, launching the first models of the Electric Urban Car Family.
- Built on the shared MEB+ platform, the entry-level series pools resources to increase competitiveness; Volkswagen Group CEO Thomas Schäfer noted the project delivers €600 million in cost savings.
- The new models feature two battery options offering a range of up to 454 km , with the ID. Polo starting at entry-level pricing; Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume called them "compelling entry-level cars that are affordable for many."
- After the vehicles rolled off the line, Blume said the company is "stepping up the pace of electrification in Europe," while the Cupra Raval introduces "the most radical version of the urban EV" design.
- With Chinese brands like BYD gaining market share, the Group is prioritizing a "clear Made-in-Europe strategy" to ensure a level playing field while strengthening Europe's industrial base.
