The schools turning to AI to rate students beyond standard grades
The tools will give teachers first-pass assessments of student work and feedback while final ratings remain with educators.
- In July, The New York-based company Legend acquired The Mastery Transcript Consortium, bringing AI tools to 400 schools that will rate academic and "Soft" skills while skipping traditional A-F grading.
- The platform allows teachers to upload digital files or photos of student work for evaluation. Artificial intelligence provides a first pass of assessment, though teachers always select the final grade.
- Matt Sornson said the AI evaluates communication skills from recorded presentations, analyzing tone of voice, body language, and eye contact. The technology can also "review recordings, video, written scores&and student reflections," Sornson said.
- Schools can integrate skill standards from organizations like the Carnegie Foundation or the Educational Testing Service, helping colleges and employers assess student Skills for the Future.
- For subjects like music or art, Sornson noted that AI avoids judging if a piece is "good," focusing instead on technical aspects. The system evaluates elements like "rhythm, pitch and intonation&. The technology could also" review student reflections.
