Montreal Notre-Dame Basilica Prepares Façade Unveiling After 10-Year Restoration
The basilica says 20% of the work is done as it seeks donations for a $100 million restoration and plans an open-air concert.
- After close to ten years behind scaffolding, the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal is preparing for the grand unveiling of its facade, scheduled for October 25, featuring an open-air performance and indoor concert by the New World Philharmonic Society and organist Jean-Willy Kunz.
- Deterioration stems from original construction choices, including stones from a Mile End quarry laid vertically, making them permeable to rain; mortar replaced with epoxy further damaged the sedimentary stone, said Mathieu Verreault, director of tourism and operations for the basilica.
- The comprehensive restoration of the entire structure will cost $100 million, according to Michel Issa, Executive Director of the Fabrique de la paroisse Notre-Dame de Montréal; only about 20 per cent of necessary work is complete.
- To fund repairs, the basilica launched a 'sponsor a stone' campaign allowing donors to leave digital messages on the facade viewable via augmented reality, similar to technology used by Pokémon Go.
- Interior restoration work, including the star-studded blue vault, will require an additional five to ten years, as water infiltration and moisture problems continue deteriorating painted decorations throughout the building.
