The Revival of a Classic: Citroën Unveils New Electric Version of Its 2CV
Citroën says the design study revives a utilitarian van for tradespeople and delivery drivers, while the production 2CV is targeted at around €15,000.
- On Monday, October 12, 2026, Citroen unveiled a retro-styled electric 2CV concept at the Paris Motor Show, targeting a 2028 market launch that will mark the original's 80th anniversary.
- Development of the original 2CV began in 1936 as the 'Toute Petite Voiture,' or 'very small car,' designed for affordable transport. Production spanned 1948 until 1990, yielding more than 5.1 million units built.
- Priced at around £15,000, the concept measures 3,760mm long with a roll-back canvas roof and quirky door storage designed to carry eggs without breaking them.
- Citroen boss Xavier Chardon said the redesign aims to preserve 'simplicity, its accessibility and the freedom' of the original. The company plans European production to benefit from proposed manufacturing incentives.
- While the passenger 2CV is confirmed for 2028, the electric Fourgonnette van remains a design study and has not been greenlit for production. Compact van seekers can currently access the Citroen Berlingo-based conversion from Carrozzeria Caselani.
