The rarest £1 coins in UK change that sell for up to £60 online
Collectors say pristine examples and minting errors can lift modern £1 coins far above face value.
Searching through piggy banks and sofa cushions could reveal forgotten coins worth far more than their face value, as collectors and buyers often pay significant premiums for rare editions found in everyday change.
The Capital Cities series features several rare designs, with the Edinburgh City coin standing as the single rarest modern round pound; only 935,000 were produced, featuring Edinburgh Castle and the Latin inscription Nisi Dominus Frustra.
Checking modern twelve-sided change reveals the 2022 edition is currently the rarest in active circulation, with a mintage of 7,735,000, while new coins bearing the effigy of King Charles III have since followed, including 9 million 2025 bee-decorated pieces.
According to MyCoinage, circulated Edinburgh coins typically sell for between £15 and £25, though specimens kept in pristine, uncirculated condition or presentation packaging can fetch between £40 and £60 from collectors.
Collector interest extends to rare minting errors and pre-release trial pieces; around 200,000 twelve-sided trial coins were struck for machine testing, while handled examples fetch between £15 and £30.
