Over a hundred rare books have disappeared from libraries in major European cities in recent years. In some cases, the alleged thefts amounted to no more than the failure to return a book on loan, while in others there was clearly an organized act and a determined desire to commit the crime. What the books all have in common is that they are canonical works of Russian literature.
Between 2022 and 2023, dozens of rare publications of Pushkin, Gogol and Lermontov disappeared from libraries throughout Europe — from Riga to Paris — and some 170 books were stolen during this period, according to The Guardian, with a total value of more than 2.5 million pounds.
