Japan PM drops bid to pass FY 2026 budget on time, Diet to OK stopgap step
Japan's ruling party led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Monday formally abandoned its plan to enact the annual budget for fiscal 2026 in time for its April start, as the Diet moves to pass an 8.56 trillion yen ($54 billion) stopgap measure at the last minute.
The provisional budget bill for fiscal year 2026 was passed by a majority vote in the House of Representatives plenary session on the 30th, with support from the ruling party and opposition parties including the Centrist Reform Coalition, and passed through the House of Representatives. It was immediately sent to the House of Councillors, where it is expected to be enacted after committee and plenary sessions that afternoon.
