‘The predicament of my life.’ Wrongfully convicted N.B. man dies from cancer
- On Oct. 13, 2025, Innocence Canada confirmed Robert Mailman died in Saint John, N.B., on Thursday just before midnight at age 77, less than two years after his acquittal.
- Originally, Mailman and Walter Gillespie were convicted on May 11, 1984 for the 1983 beating death of George Gilman Leeman despite strong alibis, and they filed for a federal review in December, 2019.
- Legal filings detailed specific failings including recanted witnesses and forensic evidence, and Chief Justice Tracey DeWare apologized for the 'miscarriage of justice.'
- In February of last year, Innocence Canada announced a 'satisfactory' settlement with the New Brunswick government, but Robert Mailman said no money would return lost time and his two sons died while he was imprisoned.
- On the larger issue, Mailman had lived under a wrongful conviction for more than half his life, and tests in November 2023 confirmed terminal liver cancer, with about three months to live.
