Construction on Montreal Port Expansion Underway as ‘Nation-Building’ Effort Ramps Up
The $2.3 billion project will add a terminal capable of handling 1.15 million containers a year, the Port of Montreal said.
- Workers have begun building a stone jetty in Contrecoeur for the Montreal Port Authority expansion, creating a platform for machinery and the future surface of a shipping container yard.
- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney launched this project of "national interest" last April, backed by a $1.16 billion loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank for the approximately $2.3 billion initiative.
- The future terminal is projected to handle 1.15 million containers annually and increase the Port's capacity by 60 per cent, with operations expected to begin in 2030.
- To mitigate environmental impacts, the APM is investing approximately $36 million in compensation measures, including $17 million for the endangered copper redhorse, and installing turbidity curtains to "reduce the release of suspended matter."
- The APM expects to finalize an agreement with operator DP World by early 2027, granting the firm responsibility for terminal operations and maintenance for a 40-year period.
