Since the 1990s, the PNP has distinguished itself as a party with two strong leaders. During those years, they were Pedro Rosselló and Carlos Romero Barceló. The latter, as resident commissioner, as he had done with the mayor's office in San Juan, gave the party a new dimension, turning it into a gateway to the governorship. From there, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, Luis Fortuño, Pedro Pierluisi, and Jenniffer González aspired to govern.
