Fugitive Polish Opposition Politician Reportedly in Pro-Russian Moldovan Breakaway Region
- On Wednesday, Polish authorities confirmed that former deputy justice minister Marcin Romanowski sent a letter from Transnistria requesting safe passage to Poland. The fugitive, who fled Budapest earlier this year, remains wanted on criminal charges.
- Romanowski faces 11 alleged crimes from his tenure at the justice ministry under Zbigniew Ziobro. Both politicians obtained asylum in Hungary under PiS-ally Orb but fled after the government lost power.
- Transnistria, a breakaway region of Moldova with around 360,000 residents, maintains close ties to Russia. Central Anticorruption Bureau head PaweB Wojtunik wrote that living there requires consent from the local KGB, managed by Russian intelligence.
- Deputy defence minister Cezary Tomczyk stated Romanowski is likely under Russian intelligence influence. Conversely, Romanowski and Ziobro denied allegations, claiming to be victims of "political revenge" by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
- Poland continues efforts to locate and extradite both men. Authorities formally asked the US to detain and extradite Ziobro, whose refugee status and travel documents in Hungary were revoked earlier this year.
