The pet industry’s biggest spender isn’t who anyone predicted — and the data behind the dog dad boom proves it
Dog dads have become the fastest-growing segment of dog owners in the U.S., influencing product development, travel, and pet healthcare in a pet industry set to reach $165 billion in 2025.
Dog ownership increased from 51% to 53% of U.S. households between 2024 and 2025, adding about 4 million households, with men accounting for much of this growth.
Among Gen Z dog owners, 58% are men, rising to 63% among millennial dog owners.
Pet parents spent an average of $2,360 in 2025, including $1,135 on health-related expenses, and 65% would cut their own spending before reducing pet expenses.
