China Expands Digital Yuan Access with Eight Lenders
The expansion lifts authorized e-CNY operators to 30 as the central bank seeks broader access and more secure, convenient payment options.
On Monday, Aug. 17, the People's Bank of China added eight commercial banks to its digital yuan network, raising the total number of authorized service operators to 30.
The PBOC tied this expansion to China's 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026-2030, which calls for steady development of the digital renminbi, following a round of approvals four months ago that raised the operator count to 22.
These eight banks are now connected to the central bank-side digital renminbi system, establishing the technical infrastructure required for service provision; however, institutions must complete remaining business and technical preparations before beginning customer-facing operations.
Earlier in August, Guangdong published a draft development plan proposing cross-border digital yuan trials within the China Pilot Free Trade Zone, with public consultation on the regional policy open until Sept. 5.
Officials aim to improve access to e-CNY services and respond to demand for secure and efficient payment options as the central bank plans to continue bringing more institutions into the system under market-oriented principles.
