New Legislation Will Grant Legal Status to Mt Sinai Monastery

A bill tabled by the government in Parliament Friday will grant legal status in Greece to St Catherine’s Monastery on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

In the middle of a canyon in the shade of Mount Sinai, in the south of Egypt's homonymous peninsula, the remote monastery of Saint Catherine has remained active since, in the middle of the sixth century, the Byzantine emperor Justinian I ordered its construction to protect a temple previously erected near the place where God is said to have appeared to Moses. It is the oldest Christian monastery in the world inhabited uninterruptedly.
