The Meta Monitoring Council Asks Not to Replace Verification with "Community Notes" in Latin America
In a statement consulted by AFP this Saturday, the Supervisory Council argues that verification by information professionals and "community notes", created and approved by simple users of social networks, are complementary mechanisms that serve "two different purposes." The Council insists that "community notes" could be counterproductive in repressive regimes or in highly polarized countries.
WASHINGTON - The board of US technology company Meta has urged management not to replace professional fact-checkers with its "Community Notes" feature, according to a statement seen by AFP on Friday. The board is responding to the company's decision on Wednesday to begin testing the feature in 16 Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America.
