Estonia marks 76th anniversary of March deportations

Candles will be lit across the country on Tuesday evening to mark the 76th anniversary of the Soviet deportations that sent more than 22,000 Estonians to Siberia in 1949.

A crowd filled the Plaza de Mayo on the 49th anniversary of the civic-military coup, on a day marked by demands to the Government and the unity of the organizations

The March deportation was the communist regime's most massive act of terrorism against Estonian citizens. Over 20,700 people were taken off armed guard and loaded onto trains over four days, hundreds were later sent to Siberia for pick up and hundreds were born on settlement. Together with all those relatives whose lives did not remain the same, deportation affected a significant part of the Estonian population.

The victims of Soviet deportations remembered in Estonia

On 25 March 1949, the Soviet regime deported 20,000 Estonian men, women, and children to Siberia.
