A quirky character rolled into Beaufort in the ‘50s, and earned a reputation as lovable but mysterious eccentric. Known only as Driftwood, he carved faces into trees around town. The last surviving example was cut down July 28, but efforts are underway to preserve the carving and Driftwood's legacy.
