Kerala HC Seeks Screening of ‘The Kerala Story 2’ After Finding Teaser, Trailer ‘Portray State Wrongly’
The High Court will screen the film amid petitions claiming it misrepresents Kerala and risks inciting communal tension, with certification requiring 16 cuts, officials said.
- On Tuesday, the Kerala High Court asked the Centre whether a pre-decision screening of The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond can be arranged before its February 27, 2026 release.
- Petitioners contend the certification violated the Cinematograph Act and the teaser was shown without a censor certificate, citing last week's Kerala High Court notice and the Atul Mishra v. Union Of India precedent.
- Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas orally observed the film misrepresents Kerala's harmony, said he would watch it tomorrow, and noted CBFC certified it with 16 cuts including halving kissing scenes.
- The court directed the Centre to obtain instructions on whether the movie could be screened and to inform it in the post-lunch session, listed the matter for 2 pm, and the producers sought time to confirm a screening date.
- The court noted the presumption from CBFC certification is not absolute and can be rebutted by the film's content, with Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas warning such portrayals risk inciting passion and affecting Kerala's secular reputation.
