Spanish Court Orders Rebel Nuns Out of Convent
BELORADO, SPAIN, AUG 1 – The court ruled the nine excommunicated nuns must vacate the 15th century convent after siding with the archbishop, with forcible eviction possible if they refuse.
- On Thursday, the Briviesca court ordered the nine excommunicated Order of Saint Clara nuns to vacate the Belorado convent and return it to the Church.
- Order of Saint Clara nuns broke with the Vatican last year, claiming their attempt to buy another convent was blocked, and denounced ecclesiastical authorities' actions.
- The nuns pledged allegiance to excommunicated priest Sánchez-Franco, who adheres to sedevacantism rejecting all popes since Pius XII, their lawyer said.
- Challenging the order, their lawyer said Alaez `would appeal` after the court warned they would be forcibly evicted, noting the Church's valid ownership and the nuns' lack of legal title.
- The Archbishop of Burgos emphasized, `they had no legal right to remain in the 15th century convent` after excommunication, asserting the Church's authority.
