The tension between the Antwerp coalition partners N-VA and Vooruit is already palpable 6 months into the legislature. The vote on the Israeli flag on the city hall facade was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.
The dispute in the Antwerp coalition over the Israeli flag raised to the city hall reached its peak on Monday evening at the communal council. Vooruit supported a motion by the Groen opposition party calling for the flag to be withdrawn. "Vooruit is influenced by the PTB," we hear in the ranks of the N-VA. The Vooruit group leader in Antwerp, Kathleen Van Brempt, denies this accusation. "For us, it is an ethical question."
