China's declining birth rate has hit kindergartens hardest. The latest official data shows that the number of full-time kindergarten teachers in China decreased by nearly 220,000 last year, a reduction of about 7.7% compared to 2024. Many teacher training colleges have stopped enrolling students in or abolished preschool education-related departments, or have shifted their focus to training personnel for elderly care services.
Russian media also reported that the figure of 280 million people was only reached after adding up the publicly available figures for China's urban population. Based on the conventional rule of an equal urban and rural population, China's actual population should be around 500 million.
