The Ministry of Finance has prepared a revision of the 2026 budget, which it has submitted to the Fiscal Council. According to Finance Minister András Kármán, the inherited budget deficit would have increased to 8.3% of GDP, which he called a "terribly large" deficit. This year, state operations will be more economical by a total of about 700 billion forints, and the deficit target will be 7.5 percent.
The Ministry of Finance calls this the "budget of reality" after it was previously revealed that the Orbán government had kept quiet about a series of expenditures and that this year's deficit was actually pointing towards 8.3 percent instead of 3.7.
